Leadership does not mean standing out, but standing up for what you believe in and those around you!
The lesson to understand the true meaning of leadership came years after reaching my “adult” age for me. And it is a continuous learning journey, I have experienced it changing throughout my lifetime. I strongly believe that it is impacted by the stage in your life, people surrounding you, and activities you get involved in.
Society labels leaders, the people who are at the forefront or on top, but I do not believe that is the case. The dictionary defines leadership as to influence, inspire and help others become their best selves, building their skills and achieving goals along the way. There are people who are not around crowds and they build themselves up and their own skills! It is important to determine which kind of leader you are and truly evaluate the goals and areas which you will aim to achieve success through.
Information exists outlining the traits, types, and principles to be the greatest leader but it is important to expand your capabilities at all times. Adaptability is my suggestion for anyone who seeks advice on leadership, it is vital to include contingency planning for your goals. The industry in which you are aiming to build wealth impacts the leadership style to incorporate.
Allegedly there are numerous characteristics which a leader should possess, but the most important is COMMUNICATION!
The “type” of leadership label you choose varies on the choice of words you prefer to share and perhaps the assessment you use to determine. A good tool has been D.I.S.C. It is a behavioral assessment that businesses and other organizations sometimes use to determine employees' and managers' leadership strengths and weaknesses.
The time I did take the assessment, it was interesting to observe results as a team to learn about each other. Below is the profiles and meaning:
D) Dominance
I) Influence
S) Steadiness
C) Conscientiousness
Once you discover what is a type of leadership style you can align more with, it can improve so many parts of your career. Communication is the major skill to master through leadership to align with others who are impacted and influence your moves.
The assessments tend to cost a price, some businesses support individuals going through the experience of DISC, but there are many professionals who never narrow their leadership styles down.
If you feel that you’d like to determine your leadership style, HR Mami does have a short exercise to complete for help! No matter what, we are all leaders in different ways and spaces.
